I Remember
By the first of August the invisible beetles began to snore and the grass was as tough as hemp and was no colour—no more than the sand was a colour and we had worn our bare feet bare since the twentieth of June and there were times we forgot to wind up your alarm clock and some nights we took our gin warm and neat from old jelly glasses while the sun blew out of sight like a red picture hat...

Decisions!
to Yvonne Georgina Puig date Wed, Dec 24, 2008 at 11:37 AM subject Re: boat mailed-by yahoo.com hide details 11:37 AM (6 hours ago) Reply: the boat is a 30” islander, it might work for you ( space and amenities wise) for a few days a week, I know a guy who rents a bunk bed in an apartment for 25 bucks a night the issues is you would share it with four other people (also female) but...

Insider points
Shopping at Loehmann’s during the holidays is like contesting a parking ticket at the Los Angeles Department of Motor Vehicles, like immigrating to the United States via turn-of-the-century Ellis Island, like filing your taxes. It’s very confusing and you’re going to wait awhile. For starters, don’t try to understand all your coupons. There’s no point. Once you get...

The Best Time of the Day
Cool summer nights. Windows open. Lamps burning. Fruit in the bowl. And your head on my shoulder. These the happiest moments in the day. Next to the early morning hours, of course. And the time just before lunch. And the afternoon, and early evening hours. But I do love these summer nights. Even more, I think, than those other times. The work finished for the day. And no one can reach us now. Or...

Spoiler alert
What if Lily Bart had not overdosed on sleeping meds? I think about this fairly often. If she had married Lawrence Selden would it have made a difference in her happiness? Aside from the obvious fact that she would not have had to work that miserable job trimming hats, would it have undone the damage? The whole thing, every jerk in her life, conspired to make her vulgar by no fault of her own. She...

What is worse?
A) To be the person thumbing slowly through, and possibly even reading, the Skymall catalog for three hours straight, who upon reaching the end of the catalog, tears out a 10-dollar discount coupon B) To be the person sitting beside the Skymall catalog-thumber, watching with interest C) To be the person watching the watcher watch the catalog-thumber, disbelieving D) All of these people are...

The young man sitting in front of me
… is writing a screenplay. From here I read: Policeman: He’s a good detective. He has that good detective smell. I want to know about this smell! Donuts and Brut? Coffee and Armor-all? Shoe polish and ham sandwich? Does anyone know?

Fog banks are really something. I’ve been watching one move in from off the coast, closer, closer, closer and now we’re inside of it. All white and airy and I feel as if I’m very high up in the sky.
